So, in the last couple of weeks I've taken two trips to the cinema to see two films that I was very excited for: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Guardians of the Galaxy. If you want to and haven't seen either of this films, stop reading, if you have feel free to carry on.
Lets start with Apes.
I only watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes a couple of weeks ago, and I only watched it because I saw a trailer for Dawn and really wanted to it, so I figured I should watch the first one. I didn't expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did, but I totally loved it, and it definitely made me even more excited for Dawn.
And I was not disappointed.
I wasn't entirely prepared to have my heart strings pulled on as much as they were, and I definitely didn't expect to be so attached to a fictional ape, but the scene where Koba shoots Ceasar had me in tears, I was more than a little worried that Ceasar was actually dead. But he wasn't, and my poor, female heart recovered. Until Blue Eyes found his father in the house where he grew up, and that totally broke my heart. More tears were shed. And I cried when Ceasar's wife was maybe going to die, and I cried when she was totally alive and well, I mean I cried a lot. It is an incredibly well done, heart-wrenching film. And visually it was stunning. The CGI was nothing short of incredible, and the acting all round was incredible. Andy Serkis stole the show completely though. I came out of the cinema totally, utterly awed, feeling like I'd experienced cinematic genius. And I have no doubt it will look twice as amazing on the small screen!
Now, Guardians.... What to say about Guardians. It was amazing. Possibly the best fun I've had in the cinema ever, and definitely, 100% my favourite Marvel film ever. If you haven't seen it, go away, you're not going to want to read any more.
Ok, I knew from the opening credits scene that the whole thing was going to be hilarious. Star-Lord dancing along to his 80's mix tape (I am going to buy that album!). It was hilarious. It's a fairly sad start to the film though, with Peter's mums death and him being taken by an alien ship, then it's straight into the hilarity. There's dancing Peter (Star-Lord), then there's a quick firefight, lot of nice quips by Peter, and then there's Rocket Raccoon and Groot. And Stan Lee's cameo. There he is, an old man standing chatting to a young girl, and Rocket Raccoon saying "what would your wife think?" the whole cinema was cracking up from there, and it only got better! Thanos looked amazing, and Lee Pace (who is also Thranduil in The Hobbit) did an amazing job as Ronan the Accuser. I have to admit I wasn't sure about Batista as Drax, because for me Batista has always been a wrestler, but he did an amazing job. And Vin Diesel as the adorable Groot was just amazing. I also really liked Zoe Saldana as Gamorra, she played the part wonderfully, and the scene with her, Rocket, Peter and Groot at the beginning was just hilarious. There is one scene that I think may have been entirely improvised, with Peter holding out the orb to give it the The Collector, and dropping it on the floor. I really don't think that was scripted! The whole film from start to finish was just great fun, every last second, right up to the scene just before the credits with a baby dancing Groot, bopping away to I Want You Back by the Jackson 5, and then stopping still when Drax turned to look, It was just fantastic. And then of course, there is the after the credits scene, and if you're still reading this I'm going to assume you've seen it, if you haven't, well you've been warned multiple times.
HOWARD THE DUCK!!!!!! Man, now that I was not expecting! And naturally I am now very excited for hopefully a Howard the Duck film!!
