Configuring Professional Networking Settings In Windows 7

There are three different ways of organizing computers in a network. These are workgroups, homegroups and domains. You can find a post on configuring a homegroup here.
If you are using Windows 7 at work, you can create, or join a workgroup. In a workgroup all computers a peers, so no one computer has control over another. If you want to log on to another computer in the network you must have an account to log into it, all computers must be on the same subnet, and there are not normally more than 20 computers to a group. Unlike a homegroup, a workgroup is not protected by a password.
To join a workgroup you need to open your control panel and select System.

Under Computer name, domain and workgroup setting, click change settings.

Click on the Change button.

Enter the name of the workgroup you would like to join and click ok.

You will then get a pop-up confirming you have joined the workgroup.

In order to apply to changes you will need to restart your computer.

If you would like to add your computer to a domain you need to follow the same procedure as above, but rather than adding a workgroup name you tick the domain box and enter the name of the domain you would like to connect to.Once you have clicked ok, you will need to restart your computer before the changes are made.
